Money & payment

Cards, cash, tax refunds and tipping

01

Cards work widely, but keep a little cash

International cards are accepted in many stores, cafes, hotels, and restaurants. Still, keep some cash for transit-card top-ups, older markets, small stalls, or backup situations.

A small cash reserve prevents simple problems from slowing down your day.

02

Use ATMs marked for global cards

Not every ATM accepts foreign cards. Look for Global ATM, International Card, or major network logos such as Visa, Mastercard, Plus, or Cirrus.

Bank ATMs inside branches or major convenience stores are usually more reliable than random machines.

03

Tipping is not expected in normal situations

Restaurants, cafes, taxis, and hotels generally do not require tipping. Good service is appreciated, but tipping can sometimes confuse the transaction.

For guided tours or special private services, follow the provider policy or your own travel norm.

04

Tax refunds are easiest when you keep your passport handy

Some shops offer immediate tax refund or airport refund paperwork. You may need your passport at purchase, so keep a photo and the actual passport available when shopping seriously.

Keep receipts together until you leave Korea.

05

Check dynamic currency conversion before paying

Some card terminals may offer to charge in your home currency. This can be convenient, but the exchange rate may be worse.

When possible, paying in KRW is often the cleaner option, then your card issuer handles the conversion.
